Passed over for promotion, the ensign Iago nurses a quiet grudge and reaches for the cruelest weapon: not a blade, but a whisper. Drop by drop he poisons Othello with the idea that his faithful wife has betrayed him, until jealousy burns away everything decent in the soldier. Laurence Fishburne was the first Black actor to play Othello in a major film; Kenneth Branagh plays Iago almost confidingly, straight into the camera, with Irène Jacob as Desdemona.

Oliver Parker's directing debut trims the play hard and adds a frank physicality that felt bold for mid-90s Shakespeare. It leans on three performances and a slowly tightening trap rather than spectacle. If you like the Bard on screen and a villain worth watching, it's a strong pick.
