Synopsis
A Gorgeous Girl Like Me (Une belle fille comme moi, 1972) is a François Truffaut crime comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Coming off his celebrated dramas, the New Wave master pivoted to a sour, mischievous satire about a femme fatale who keeps slipping the noose. A young sociologist, Stanislas Previne, is researching female criminality and lands an interview with a woman behind bars.
Camille Bliss is locked up for murder, and from her chair in the prison visiting room she calmly dictates her life story — a parade of men she charmed, fleeced and discarded. Bernadette Lafont plays her so slyly that you never quite know which parts are confession and which are convenient fiction. The longer Stanislas listens, the harder he falls, scholarly detachment and all. With Claude Brasseur, Charles Denner and a debuting André Dussollier in the mix, Truffaut needles male gullibility and the very notion of "studying" a woman from the outside. It's light, cynical and far less tender than the director's reputation suggests — a treat for anyone who likes their French classics with a wicked streak.
