Synopsis
Fando and Lis (Fando y Lis, 1972) is Alejandro Jodorowsky's surreal first feature, and you can watch online on iFILM if you want cinema that breaks the rules. Fando pushes his lover Lis along a wasteland in a battered cart — she's paralysed from the waist down — chasing the mythical city of Tar, where they believe she'll be healed.
The journey unfolds as a string of waking dreams. Wandering philosophers, bodies caked in mud, old men gambling over fates: each stop pulls the couple further from reason. Fando's love swings between tenderness and cruelty, and the road starts to look less like travel than a nightmare with no exit.
Jodorowsky adapted it from a play by Fernando Arrabal and his Panic Theatre, and its premiere in Acapulco set off a riot in the auditorium. Shot in stark black and white, plotless by design, it works as a fever dream rather than a story. This one's for viewers ready for radical arthouse with no hand-holding.
