Synopsis
The Bride Wore Black (La mariée était en noir, 1968) is a French crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by François Truffaut and starring Jeanne Moreau. Adapted from a William Irish novel, it marked one of the few times Truffaut worked in the thriller register — a deliberate nod to Hitchcock, down to the score by Bernard Herrmann, who composed Psycho and Vertigo.
Julie Kohler's husband was shot dead on the steps of the church. A stray bullet. Five men responsible. Julie changes her name, builds a new persona, and goes to find each one. She arrives as a stranger, earns trust by whatever means the situation requires, and leaves when the job is done. The five men have no idea who she is or what connects them until the moment they do.
Moreau plays Julie without theatrics — flat, unhurried, certain. That steadiness is what makes the film unsettling rather than melodramatic. Truffaut never asks the audience to feel sorry for the men or to judge the woman; he simply follows her, and that refusal to editorialize is the film's sharpest quality.
