Synopsis
Three Times (最好的時光, 2005) is a meditative romance from Taiwanese master Hou Hsiao-hsien, and you can watch it online on iFILM. One film, three eras, a single pair of actors: Shu Qi and Chang Chen play lovers across 1966, 1911 and the present day.
The first chapter follows a soldier drifting between pool halls, chasing a girl across the island while pop ballads play. The second slips into a 1911 brothel and is shot almost like a silent picture, dialogue rendered in intertitles. The third lands in the noise of modern Taipei: motorbikes, seizures, text messages, and a love that can't quite say what it means. Same faces, three completely different moods.
Hou builds everything from long, patient takes, trusting silence and a glance over spoken lines; the film screened in competition at Cannes. This isn't a movie for anyone waiting on plot twists, it's about how time turns feeling into memory. A quiet, deliberate piece for fans of Asian arthouse cinema.
