Synopsis
Café Lumière (2004) is a Japanese-Taiwanese art-house drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Taiwan's Hou Hsiao-hsien as a centenary tribute to Yasujiro Ozu.
Yoko, played by singer Yo Hitoto, returns to Tokyo to research a Taiwanese composer who spent the 1930s working in Japan. She is quietly pregnant with no particular plans around it. Her closest company is Hajime (Tadanobu Asano), a used-bookstore owner who helps track down the old records — their bond stays in the register of genuine friendship rather than romance. Hou shoots in unhurried long takes: elevated train lines, near-empty platforms, the particular quality of afternoon light in a coffee shop. A film about mood and place; plot is secondary.
