Synopsis
Robert Altman's satirical Western Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976) is ready to watch online on iFILM, with Paul Newman as the showman who sells his own legend straight from the stage.
By the close of the 1800s, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody has turned himself into an attraction — a touring Wild West revue full of trick shooting, staged charges and heroic poses. To boost the spectacle, he recruits Chief Sitting Bull. The old leader, though, has no intention of playing the assigned extra: he carries his own grievance, his own version of history and a request meant for the President himself. Behind the applause, the gap keeps widening between the myth and the man peddling it. Joel Grey, Kevin McCarthy, Harvey Keitel and Geraldine Chaplin round out the troupe.
Altman made the film for America's bicentennial as a needling joke about national mythology, where the hero drinks, struts and frets that the crowd will spot the fake. It won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. A loose, sardonic picture for anyone who likes a Western that turns its own clichés inside out. Stream Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976) online on iFILM.
