God Told Me To
The people of this city are being terrorized. The crimes have no motives. The killers have only one explanation...
Synopsis
God Told Me To (1976) is Larry Cohen's cult horror-thriller, part detective story and part science fiction, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A wave of senseless killings hits New York: ordinary people calmly gun down strangers, slaughter their own families, and offer the same chilling excuse — God told them to.
Detective Peter Nicholas (Tony Lo Bianco), a devout Catholic, takes the case and watches his faith buckle the deeper he digs. A sniper on a water tower, a father who butchers his family at dinner, a cop who opens fire on fellow officers during a parade: the scattered massacres share a thread that leads to a mysterious figure and to a secret buried in Nicholas's own past. That parade cop, by the way, is played by Andy Kaufman in his film debut.
Cohen shot it guerrilla-style on real streets without permits, and that grimy texture gives the picture an unsettling, you-are-there charge. Disguised as a police procedural, it sneaks in wild theological sci-fi that veers somewhere genuinely unexpected by the end. It's a strange, ragged, one-of-a-kind film for fans of 1970s horror oddities. Stream God Told Me To (1976) online on iFILM.
