Fire Will Come

Fire Will Come (O que arde, 2019) is a slow-burning drama from Spanish director Oliver Laxe, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It unfolds deep in the mountains of rural Galicia, where the landscape matters more than dialogue and time barely moves.

Amador has just served two years for arson. No one is waiting when he comes back to his remote village. He moves in with his aging mother, Benedicta, helps tend their three cows, and says little; the neighbours keep their distance, unwilling to forget. Days pass to the rhythm of rain, fog and chores. Then fire arrives — a blaze tears through the forest at night, and suspicion falls exactly where it always does.

The film took the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, and first-time actress Benedicta Sánchez won a Goya for playing the mother. Laxe works almost without music or plot machinery, trusting the camera and the sound of the woods instead.
