Synopsis
The Last Wagon (1956), directed by Delmer Daves, is a Western you can watch online on iFILM. Richard Widmark plays Comanche Todd — a white man who grew up among the Comanche, now in irons and headed to trial for the murder of three men.
Those three men killed his wife. Todd acted by the only code he had ever lived under, not the one that applied in Arizona courtrooms. His escort is hit by an Apache raid before they reach the trial. Most of the party is killed. The survivors — a scattered group of young settlers with no wilderness experience — are left dependent on the shackled prisoner to get them out alive.
Delmer Daves spent the 1950s quietly revising the Western from inside. His films gave Native American characters genuine motivation at a time when the genre rarely bothered.
