Synopsis
The Happiness of the Katakuris (2002) is a Japanese horror musical you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Takashi Miike.
The Katakuri family has just opened a mountain guest house and desperately needs its first real customers. Their first guest hangs himself. Their second, a champion sumo wrestler, dies mid-coitus, crushing his teenage partner under his weight. Rather than call the authorities, the family starts digging. The bodies accumulate. So does the choreography: Miike shoots the burials as musical numbers, the family singing through each catastrophe with a sincerity that never tips into parody.
A remake of the 1998 Korean film The Quiet Family, but Miike swaps its dread for pure deranged joy — zombie choirs, a volcano eruption, a fake member of the British royal family. It should not work. It absolutely does. Stream The Happiness of the Katakuris (2002) online on iFILM.
