Synopsis
Blue Gate Crossing (藍色大門, 2002) is a Taiwanese coming-of-age drama by Yee Chih-yen, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's a quiet film about high schoolers, summer heat, bicycles and a first crush nobody quite understands. The picture became a calling card for early-2000s Taiwanese cinema and screened at Cannes.
Teenager Yueh-chen is hung up on Shihao, a boy on the swim team, but she's too shy to say so and sends her best friend Kerou to pass along a note. The errand backfires: Shihao starts warming to Kerou instead. And Kerou isn't sure what she feels at all — her eyes keep drifting back toward her friend. What could have been a sitcom triangle plays instead as a careful, honest attempt to figure out who you are. A young Gwei Lun-mei and Chen Bolin carry the awkwardness almost without dialogue.
At just 85 minutes, the film skips big scenes entirely; the drama lives in pauses, glances and things left unsaid. Anyone drawn to Asian arthouse stories about teenagers, or to the ache of a first attraction that hasn't found its name yet, will hold onto this one. Stream Blue Gate Crossing (2002) online on iFILM.
