Synopsis
The Dancer Upstairs (2002) is a political thriller you can watch online on iFILM — and John Malkovich's directorial debut. Javier Bardem plays Agustín Rejas, a detective who has spent twelve years tracking a guerrilla leader called Ezekiel, whose followers hang dead dogs from lampposts as calling cards. The country is never named, but the template is Peru's Shining Path, and the manhunt follows the shape of the real pursuit of Abimael Guzmán.
Nicholas Shakespeare wrote the source novel in 1995, drawing on accounts from inside the investigation. Rejas is principled in a rotting institution: he doesn't take bribes, doesn't torture suspects, and isn't sure whether that makes him honest or just out of step. Then he meets Yolanda, a dance teacher whose connection to the case runs deeper than he realizes. Juan Diego Botto and Laura Morante round out the cast.
At 132 minutes, the pacing is deliberate — Malkovich is interested in erosion, not action beats. Bardem does most of his work quietly, without raising his voice once. Stream The Dancer Upstairs (2002) online on iFILM.
