Synopsis
Venice Calling (Venise n'est pas en Italie, 2019) is a French-Belgian coming-of-age comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Fifteen-year-old Emile lives in Montargis with a father who has been building the same house for years and a mother who insists on dyeing his hair blond every month because it makes him look better. Then the girl he likes invites him to Venice. He says yes immediately.
His parents decide to come along. The road trip that follows piles awkward moment on awkward moment, but director Ivan Calbérac keeps the tone gentle rather than cruel — this is less a disaster-comedy and more a portrait of a teenager who gradually realises his embarrassing family might actually be worth something. Benoît Poelvoorde and Valérie Bonneton play the parents; Hélie Thonnat is Emile.
