The Return of Godzilla
Breaking 30 years of silence comes the anticipated-worldwide latest "Godzilla" work!
Synopsis
The Return of Godzilla (1984) is Toho's sci-fi reboot you can watch online on iFILM. Director Koji Hashimoto brought the creature back after a thirty-year absence and stripped the series back to basics — no monster battles, no campy allies, just one enormous problem that no government knows how to handle.
A fishing vessel is destroyed off the Japanese coast, and the lone survivor recognizes what hit them. The Japanese government moves to suppress the news, but the situation is already spiraling: both the United States and the Soviet Union are prepared to launch nuclear strikes on Tokyo if it means stopping the creature from advancing. Keiju Kobayashi plays the prime minister caught between protecting his country's sovereignty and watching it turn to rubble.
Released at the height of Cold War tensions, the film carries the same anti-nuclear weight as the 1954 original — Godzilla as the consequence of forces no superpower can put back in the bottle. It's darker and more earnest than most Western monster films of the era, and holds up as political sci-fi as much as kaiju spectacle. Stream Godzilla (1984) online on iFILM.
