Godzilla vs. Hedorah
The Smog Monster Hedorah arrives in a shooting star!
Synopsis
Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) is a Japanese sci-fi horror from Toho you can watch online on iFILM. Director Yoshimitsu Banno made the strangest, most politically charged entry in the franchise: the villain isn't a prehistoric creature or a nuclear experiment gone wrong — it's an alien organism that feeds on industrial pollution.
A tadpole-like thing washes ashore in Sagami Bay, and Professor Yano and his son Ken start investigating. The creature grows fast. Hedorah shifts between liquid, solid and flying form, spews sulfuric acid mist, and leaves corpses wherever it drifts. Godzilla charges in to stop it, and their fight is ugly — industrial wasteland, bodies dissolving, no clean victory. Banno shot protest footage of real factory smokestacks in between the monster battles. The social commentary is anything but subtle.
