Synopsis
The Hotel New Hampshire (1984) is a tragicomedy directed by Tony Richardson, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The rise, ruin and reinvention of one very strange American family.
Adapted from John Irving's novel, it follows the Berry clan. Father Win quits teaching to chase his dream of running hotels — first in New England, then in Vienna — dragging along a houseful of kids, a pet bear and a dog. Their son John, who narrates, is hopelessly in love with his own sister Franny, and the years bring love, violence and loss in equal measure.
The young cast is the draw: Jodie Foster, Rob Lowe and Nastassja Kinski, with Matthew Modine and a tiny Seth Green in the mix. Richardson refuses to soften Irving's thorny material, setting tragedy and farce side by side. A peculiar, charming film that won't be for everyone.
