Synopsis
Kitchen Stories (Salmer fra kjøkkenet, 2003) is a Norwegian-Swedish comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. In the early 1950s a Swedish institute decides to chart how single men move around their kitchens, and dispatches an observer — complete with a tall umpire's chair — to a remote Norwegian village.
Folke (Tomas Norström) is bound by the rules: sit in the corner, log every movement of bachelor Isak (Joachim Calmeyer), say nothing, help with nothing. Isak retaliates by abandoning his kitchen and spying on his guest through a hole in the ceiling. Slowly, two stubborn loners worn down by old Swedish-Norwegian distrust give in — coffee appears, then tobacco, then conversations that run past midnight. The institute's rulebook quietly falls apart.
Bent Hamer crafts an almost wordless comedy about watching and loneliness — slow, dryly funny in that Scandinavian way, the kind of humor that creeps up on you. A festival favorite for anyone who loves quiet cinema built on glances and long pauses. Stream Kitchen Stories (2003) online on iFILM.
