Synopsis
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (龍門飛甲, 2011) is a Chinese wuxia action film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tsui Hark with Jet Li in the lead — the pair's first collaboration in a decade, and one of the earliest Chinese productions to be shot natively in stereoscopic 3D.
An old legend says that once every sixty years, a colossal sandstorm strips away the desert floor and reveals a buried city of gold. The Dragon Gate Inn becomes a gathering point for everyone who wants a piece of it: imperial spies, rival mercenary gangs, treasure hunters, and a lone swordsman with unfinished business against several of the guests. Zhou Xun, Chen Kun and Li Yuchun round out the ensemble in a film that keeps rotating its loyalties and alliances right up until the storm hits.
Tsui Hark built the movie around spectacle — sword fights on crumbling rock faces, crossbow volleys through walls of flying sand, the kind of choreography that uses the full vertical frame. It doesn't aim for the emotional weight of Hero or House of Flying Daggers, but as a showcase for what Chinese action cinema was doing with 3D at that moment, it delivers.
