Synopsis
Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back (2017) is a Chinese-Hong Kong fantasy action epic you can watch online on iFILM. Tsui Hark directs from a script produced and co-written by Stephen Chow, so plenty of straight-faced myth comes wrapped in absurd comedy.
Tang Monk leads three disciples west — the Monkey King Sun Wukong, the pig Zhu Bajie and a river dragon. On the surface they're a tidy pilgrim band; underneath, nobody trusts anyone. They busk for market crowds just to eat, the monk keeps the volatile Monkey King on a short leash, and their alliance runs on threats until demons, each nastier than the last, start hunting the group.
Loosely spun from Wu Cheng'en's classic novel, it's built around large-scale CGI set pieces and wild monster transformations, with Kris Wu, Lin Gengxin and Shu Qi in the cast. It's made for the big screen and for fans who like their Eastern fantasy loud and bright. Stream the film online on iFILM.
