Synopsis
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) is a British drama by Karel Reisz that you can watch online on iFILM. Arthur Seaton spends his week at a Nottingham lathe so he can blow the wages every weekend on beer, brawls and other men's wives.
At twenty-two, Arthur has no use for bosses, unions or the gossip next door. His motto cuts to the bone: all he wants is a good time, and the rest is propaganda. He's carrying on with married Brenda while courting the younger Doreen, and the reckoning for that recklessness keeps creeping closer. Albert Finney took his first leading role here and walked off the set a star.
Alan Sillitoe adapted his own novel for the screen, and Reisz shot it squarely in the "angry young man" and kitchen-sink tradition: real factories, real pubs, the cramped terraced houses of the working-class North, with none of the gloss. The film picked up the BAFTA for Best British Film and still reads as a turning point for the country's cinema. It's for anyone who likes social realism that refuses to lecture.
