About

Synopsis

Sergeant Rutledge (1960) is a John Ford western you can watch online on iFILM. A respected Black cavalry sergeant faces court-martial, charged with raping and killing a white woman and gunning down her father — his own commanding officer. On the frontier, most everyone has already decided how the trial ends.

Braxton Rutledge served with honor and earned the trust of the men beside him. Inside the military courtroom, none of that outweighs the color of his skin. Ford tells the story through testimony and flashback: witness after witness takes the stand, and every account nudges the truth a little further into view. Woody Strode anchors the film with sheer bearing — his Rutledge does not plead, he refuses to be made small.

For 1960 this was rare ground for Hollywood: a western that puts a Black hero at its center and names racism out loud rather than dressing it up. Ford's regular cinematographer Bert Glennon shot it among the buttes of Monument Valley. If you know Ford from Stagecoach and The Searchers, this one shows a sharper, more political side of him.
