H.M.S. Defiant

H.M.S. Defiant (1962) is a British naval drama directed by Lewis Gilbert — watch it online on iFILM, with Alec Guinness and Dirk Bogarde.

Late 18th century. The frigate Defiant sails as part of England's fleet at war with France, commanded by the measured Captain Crawford (Guinness). His first officer, played by Bogarde, runs a parallel campaign of petty cruelty below decks that is steadily turning the crew. They're part of a fleet-wide move to petition the Admiralty over conditions — but violence is one bad day away. Crawford has to hold the line without becoming what he's fighting against.

Gilbert frames the real conflict not between England and France but between two men on the same quarterdeck. Guinness and Bogarde play their scenes with an economy that makes the tension almost physical — a sentence cut short, a look held a beat too long.
