The villages of Longueverne and Velrans have been enemies for as long as anyone can remember. Their armies are schoolboys. The rules of engagement: capture buttons, belts and shoelaces from the enemy. Come home holding your trousers up, and your father beats you for the loss.
Lebrac, the Longueverne commander, takes one such beating and arrives at a tactical solution: next time, his troops fight with no clothes on. Nothing to capture. The film is carried by its young cast — genuinely funny and without false sentiment — with Michel Galabru and Jean Richard as the adults who have long since forgotten what it felt like to be a child.
