Cymbeline

Cymbeline (2014) is Michael Almereyda's drama you can watch online on iFILM — Shakespeare's late tragedy transplanted to present-day New York. In place of ancient Britons and Romans: crooked cops and a biker clan running the local drug trade.

King Cymbeline (Ed Harris) heads an outlaw biker gang locked in a war with the police he's bribed for years. His daughter Imogen (Dakota Johnson) secretly marries the lowborn Posthumus, and her father throws the husband out. From there it's a rigged wager on her faithfulness, poison, disguises and bloodshed — Shakespeare's plot intact, only now it runs on motorcycle exhaust. Ethan Hawke, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, John Leguizamo and Bill Pullman fill out the cast.

Almereyda pulled the same trick with Hamlet (2000), also starring Hawke; here he takes one of the Bard's knottiest plays and tests whether it survives a gangland makeover. An experiment for the curious — worth it for the cast and the odd collision of eras. Stream Cymbeline (2014) online on iFILM.
