Pacifiction

Pacifiction (2022) is Albert Serra's slow-burn thriller, available to watch online on iFILM. It unfolds on Tahiti, among palm trees, neon-lit bars and thick tropical heat.

Benoît Magimel plays De Roller, the French High Commissioner — a smooth official in a white suit, equally at home among the colonial elite and in the dim dives where he drinks with locals. He spends his days smoothing over administrative business until a rumor poisons the island: Paris may be preparing to resume nuclear testing in the Pacific. No proof, no named source, only a submarine glimpsed offshore and a paranoia that keeps spreading. De Roller circles the island, questioning, reassuring, promising, and sinks deeper into a swamp of half-truths.

Serra works almost without plot: 165 hypnotic minutes of sunsets and murmured conversations that slowly sketch a portrait of colonial power running out of road. Magimel took home the César for Best Actor for the part. This one isn't for everybody, but anyone who loves slow, atmospheric auteur cinema will sink right in.
