Synopsis
Les Cowboys (2015) is a French drama by Thomas Bidegain you can watch online on iFILM. It opens at a country-music fair somewhere in rural France: a family in cowboy hats, line dancing, easy afternoon. Then the daughter, Kelly, simply vanishes — she has left with a young man who converted to Islam, and she does not come back.
Her father Alain, played by François Damiens, turns the search into his whole existence and loses his mind and his family along the way. The son, Kid (Finnegan Oldfield), picks up the trail, and his odyssey stretches across years, from Europe toward the Middle East, where a cryptic American played by John C. Reilly enters the story. Bidegain, the screenwriter behind A Prophet and Rust and Bone, frames his directing debut as a modern western, hence the cowboys of the title.
At heart it's a loose echo of John Ford's The Searchers, with the post-9/11 world standing in for the frontier and the Wild West traded for the global unease of the 2000s. A film about obsessive love and how the hunt for a missing person devours the one who hunts. For anyone who likes slow genre cinema with a hidden floor beneath it.
