Synopsis
Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005) is a Canadian documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Director Sam Dunn — an anthropologist by training and a metalhead since age 12 — approached heavy metal the way a researcher approaches any subculture: with a framework, without condescension.
The film maps a full family tree of subgenres, from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and power metal through thrash, death, and black metal, and backs it up with interviews that read like primary sources. Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickinson, Lemmy Kilmister, Ronnie James Dio, Tom Morello, and Alice Cooper appear alongside the genre's most contested chapters — the Norwegian church burnings, the Judas Priest trial, the 1980s moral panic that tried to legislate metal off the airwaves.
Dunn never defends the music; he explains it. For longtime fans, the film organises what they already feel into a legible history; for the skeptical, it dismantles a few long-held assumptions. Stream Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005) online on iFILM.
