Synopsis
Downfall: The Case Against Boeing (2022) is a Netflix documentary directed by Rory Kennedy — stream it online on iFILM. Two Boeing 737 MAX crashes five months apart killed 346 people. The film asks how a company with Boeing's engineering reputation let that happen, and who in the chain of command knew what and when.
Through testimony from investigators, former employees, and families of the victims, the documentary traces how pressure to compete with Airbus pushed the MAX to market faster than safety protocols could keep pace. The MCAS flight-control system at the centre of both disasters was so poorly communicated that pilots at several carriers didn't know it existed until it killed them.
Kennedy's film is less interested in the mechanics of the crashes than in the culture that produced them — the shift from engineers running the company to financial analysts doing so. It is deliberately uncomfortable viewing. Stream Downfall: The Case Against Boeing (2022) online on iFILM.
