Synopsis
The Horseman on the Roof (Le Hussard sur le toit, 1995) is a French historical romance you can watch online on iFILM. Provence, 1832. A young Italian officer named Angelo is hiding out in France from the Austrian secret police when a cholera outbreak sweeps the south.
Roads are sealed, towns quarantined, bodies left in the streets. Dodging both manhunters and the plague, Angelo crosses paths with Pauline, a marquise searching for her missing husband. What follows is a long journey for two across a country gutted by disease. Olivier Martinez and Juliette Binoche carry it, an attraction that builds slowly against a backdrop of death; Gérard Depardieu and François Cluzet turn up in smaller parts.
Director Jean-Paul Rappeneau adapted Jean Giono's novel into one of the costliest French productions of its era — a sweeping costume epic with the Provençal landscape as a character of its own.
