Synopsis
The Princess of Montpensier (La Princesse de Montpensier, 2010) is a French historical drama directed by Bertrand Tavernier that you can watch online on iFILM. France, 1562: Catholics and Protestants are killing each other across the kingdom, and noble families are using the chaos to settle their own scores. Marie de Mézières (Mélanie Thierry) is in love with the young Henri de Guise (Gaspard Ulliel), but her father has other plans — she will marry the Prince of Montpensier (Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet), a man she barely knows.
The prince rides off to war almost immediately, leaving Marie in the care of his mentor, the Count of Chabannes (Lambert Wilson), who slowly falls for her himself. Guise resurfaces. The king summons the prince back. The War of Religion is closing in. Tavernier keeps all these forces pressing against one woman who has no legal standing to choose any of it.
Based on Madame de Lafayette's 17th-century novella, the film is less a romance than a precise study of how privilege and duty crush private feeling — and the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre in the background is not just scenery. Stream The Princess of Montpensier (2010) on iFILM.
