The House of Sand

The House of Sand (Casa de Areia, 2005) is a Brazilian drama from director Andrucha Waddington you can watch online on iFILM. The story starts in 1910 in the remote dunes of Maranhão state: a young woman named Áurea is dragged there by her obsessive husband, and after his death she finds herself stranded with her mother and no clear way back to the world she knew.

What unfolds across nearly sixty years is about endurance, not rescue. Real-life mother and daughter Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres each play both characters at different points in time — swapping ages and roles across the decades — which gives the film a peculiar intimacy that wouldn't work with anyone else. The sand shifts. The women don't leave.
