Holocaust (Season 1)
A story of hope in a time of despair
Synopsis
Holocaust (1978) is an American NBC miniseries you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Marvin J. Chomsky with a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Michael Moriarty, James Woods, Fritz Weaver, and David Warner.
The story opens in Berlin in 1935, tracking two families across the following decade. The Weiss family — Jewish, educated, unprepared — watches Germany shift beneath them as each new law strips another layer of their lives away. On the other side, Erik Dorf, a young lawyer with no particular convictions, attaches himself to Reinhard Heydrich and discovers how far ordinary ambition can carry a man into atrocity. Both storylines run in parallel through the war's entire arc, one spiraling toward survival, the other toward complicity.
When NBC broadcast it in 1978, the miniseries triggered genuine national debate in both the United States and West Germany, and is credited with mainstreaming the term "Holocaust" as the descriptor for the systematic murder of European Jews. Streep was barely known at the time; the part announced her. Stream Holocaust (1978) online on iFILM.
