Synopsis
Carmina and Amen (Carmina y amén, 2014) is a Spanish tragicomedy from director Paco León, and you can watch it online on iFILM. When her husband dies, Carmina doesn't announce it. A long-awaited cheque is due to arrive, so she keeps the death quiet for two days and acts as though nothing has happened.
Carmina Barrios plays a version of herself, with María León as her daughter María. The film unfolds in a Seville courtyard full of nosy neighbours, a wake that can't begin, and the absurdity that grows from a plain human calculation — who wants to bury a loved one while the bills go unpaid. León shoots grief as black comedy, letting sorrow and laughter walk side by side.
It's a follow-up to the faux-documentary hit Carmina o revienta, this time leaving the observational camera mostly behind while keeping the same Andalusian dialect and gruff tenderness. At just over 90 minutes it's a lean watch, made for anyone who likes dry Spanish humour about ordinary lives. Stream Carmina and Amen (2014) online on iFILM.
