Godland

Godland (Vanskabte land, 2022) is an Icelandic-Danish arthouse drama directed by Hlynur Pálmason — watch it online on iFILM. A young Danish priest sets out across Iceland in the late nineteenth century, commissioned to build a remote church and photograph the local congregation.

The journey keeps stretching. Elliott Crosset Hove plays the priest as a man of rigid principle whose grip loosens mile by mile. His icy stand-off with the Icelandic guide Ragnar, played by Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, carries more threat than any explicit confrontation: two men who cannot share a language, stuck together in a landscape that has no interest in either of them. Victoria Carmen Sonne appears at the edge of the story like a quiet reproach.

Pálmason shot on location through real Icelandic seasons, leaning into natural light and deliberate pacing to make the terrain feel like a judgment. The film screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2022. It works best for viewers who like landscape used as psychology — slow, cold, and genuinely unsettling by the end.
