Synopsis
Satya (सत्या, 1998) is a landmark Indian crime film directed by Ram Gopal Varma — watch it online on iFILM. A young man named Satya comes to Mumbai from South India looking for work, gets thrown in jail for something he didn't do, and comes out the other side belonging to the underworld.
In prison he meets Bhiku Mhatre, a mid-level Mumbai gang boss played by Manoj Bajpayee. Satya (J.D. Chakravarthi) isn't chasing power or position — he gravitates toward the one man who treated him like a person. Back in the city, the two become inseparable, moving through a Mumbai where every neighbourhood has an owner and staying neutral isn't an option. Urmila Matondkar plays the woman who gives Satya a reason to think he could still choose differently.
Varma made the film outside Bollywood conventions: no set-piece song breaks in the usual mould, just the specific grain of the city's criminal margins. Bajpayee's Bhiku Mhatre — charismatic, volatile, loyal to his own code — is the kind of performance that resets what you think an actor can do. At nearly three hours, Satya earns every minute.
