Synopsis
The Bird People in China (1998) is Takashi Miike's adventure-drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Wada, a mild-mannered salaryman, is sent into the remote Chinese interior to assess a jade deposit. Tagging along is Ujiie, a yakuza whose syndicate is owed money by Wada's company.
The trek to the far-off Yunnan village turns long and absurd — boats, mountains, a stubborn guide named Shen, and the slow loss of every modern comfort. What the two strangers find at journey's end isn't a fortune in jade but children being taught to fly, and a half-remembered English song that drifted into the valley from nowhere. Masahiro Motoki and Renji Ishibashi play opposites the place quietly reshapes.
The same Miike behind the savage Audition and Ichi the Killer made something tender here: a hushed, almost dreamlike fable about longing for something real. A surprisingly gentle film from cinema's great provocateur. Stream The Bird People in China (1998) online on iFILM.
