John Dawes drives big rigs and happens to be a martial-arts champion. When his kid brother Billy vanishes on his first solo haul, the trail leads to Texas City, a backwater town near Los Angeles that runs on its own rules. A crooked judge named Trimmings owns the place, his bought-off cops squeeze the county, and outsiders simply don't get in. John rolls into town alone and turns it upside down.

Norris hadn't become a star yet, and the movie plays like a rough, likeable blueprint for everything he'd do later: the quiet hero, the rotten little town, the final brawl.
