Synopsis
Gook (2017), Justin Chon's black-and-white drama set on the first day of the 1992 L.A. riots, is available to watch online on iFILM. Chon also wrote the script and stars as Eli, one of two Korean-American brothers trying to keep their late father's shoe store alive.
Eli's brother Daniel runs the floor while an eleven-year-old Black girl named Kamilla treats the back room as her second home. When the neighbourhood ignites around them, the three have to decide simultaneously whether to fight for the store and what they actually mean to each other. David So plays Daniel; Simone Baker is Kamilla.
Shot on a shoestring, Gook took home a Special Jury Prize at Sundance 2017. It is a tight, uncomfortable film about the way systemic fractures move through friendship as fast as they move through a city. Stream Gook online on iFILM.
