Synopsis
Green Fish (초록물고기, 1997) is the debut feature from South Korean director Lee Chang-dong, available to watch online on iFILM. It arrived two years before Peppermint Candy and quietly introduced one of the most precise, unsparing filmmakers in Korean cinema.
Mak-tong comes home from military service to find his hometown of Ilsan unrecognizable — the fields he grew up on are gone, replaced by concrete towers, and the neighbors have scattered. His family barely manages. A chance encounter on a commuter train pulls him toward a local crime boss, then deeper into a world that trades loyalty for money and collects on that trade without warning. Han Suk-kyu plays Mak-tong with a quietness that makes every wrong turn feel inevitable; Song Kang-ho — years before Parasite made him a household name — turns up in a small but sharp supporting role.
Lee Chang-dong tells the story without sentiment or moral instruction: just a young man looking for a foothold in a city that has moved on without him, and losing. Watch Green Fish (1997) online on iFILM.
