Synopsis
Happy Hour (2015) is Ryusuke Hamaguchi's five-hour Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM. Four women near forty share a life in the port city of Kobe.
Akari, Sakurako, Fumi and Jun tell each other everything — lunches, trips, secrets. Until one of them goes through a divorce she's kept hidden from the group. Once it surfaces, the crack runs through all four, and each is left re-reading her own marriage, job and quiet dissatisfaction. Hamaguchi shoots it in long, unbroken conversations: a workshop on listening with the body, a public reading, a dinner that stretches on and on.
All four leads are non-professional actresses Hamaguchi recruited from his own acting class, and the Locarno festival handed its best-actress prize to the four of them together. He'd go on to make Drive My Car and win an Oscar. Three hundred and seventeen minutes built out of small daily moments — for viewers happy to live alongside these women rather than rush them.
