Synopsis
Tokyo-Ga (1985) is a documentary by Wim Wenders that you can watch online on iFILM. It's the director's travel diary, shot as he goes looking for the Tokyo of Yasujiro Ozu's films.
Wenders drifts through the city as if half-dreaming, filming whatever catches his European eye: televisions in taxis, subway maps blinking in every color, workshops where plastic food is molded for restaurant windows. The Tokyo that Ozu shot from 1903 to 1963 is mostly gone. What he does find are living witnesses — actor Chishu Ryu and cameraman Yuharu Atsuta, both Ozu collaborators, who recall how that cinema came together.
Fellow filmmakers wander in too: Werner Herzog muses about pure images atop Tokyo Tower, and Chris Marker passes through. A slow, personal essay on memory, movies and a vanishing city. Best suited to Ozu admirers and fans of auteur documentary. Stream Tokyo-Ga (1985) online on iFILM.
