Synopsis
Walk on Water (2004), from Israeli director Eytan Fox, is a drama you can watch online on iFILM. Mossad agent Eyal (Lior Ashkenazi) is handed a job that doesn't feel like the killings he's used to: confirm whether an aged Nazi officer is still breathing somewhere under a borrowed name, and finish him.
His way in is the old man's family. Posing as a tour guide, Eyal escorts Axel, the grandson visiting his sister at a kibbutz, on a trip across the country. The two travel from the Sea of Galilee to Berlin, arguing about memory and guilt, suicide bombings, their fathers, and what manhood is supposed to mean. Axel is openly gay and stubbornly hopeful about people; Eyal is sealed shut. The longer the road runs, the harder it gets to keep the mission separate from the man he's starting to like.
An Israeli-Swedish co-production, it became one of the most talked-about Israeli films of its decade. Less a manhunt than a study of how a hatred drilled in since childhood comes apart when the enemy turns out to be a person.
