Synopsis
Esterno Notte (2022) is Marco Bellocchio's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Rome, the morning of 16 March 1978: a quiet street erupts in gunfire, the bodyguards fall, and Christian Democrat leader Aldo Moro is bundled into a Red Brigades car.
What follows are fifty-five days, told not from the prisoner's cell but from outside it — through the people who stayed free and failed to bring him back. Interior minister Cossiga comes apart under the strain, Pope Paul VI drafts a letter to the kidnappers, Moro's wife Eleonora waits at home, and the captors themselves keep arguing over what to do. Fabrizio Gifuni plays Moro as a tired man who already sees the ending; around him stand Toni Servillo, Margherita Buy and Fausto Russo Alesi.
This is the first half of a two-part epic that premiered at Cannes. Bellocchio circled the same wound years ago in Good Morning, Night, but here he scores it for a chorus of voices instead of a single line. Slow, severe filmmaking for anyone willing to watch politics as the tragedy of specific people. Stream Esterno Notte (2022) online on iFILM.
