The movie keeps slipping between campus satire and sincere romance, refusing to settle into either cruelty or sap. Ricci plays it right on the line between funny and raw. Sharp eyes will spot a pre-fame Melissa McCarthy and Amy Adams in small roles. It won't land for everyone, but if you like awkward, off-model romances that take real swings, this one sticks.
