Synopsis

Promised a professorship, the ambitious scientist Franz Walter swears himself to the state and signs on with foreign intelligence. His missions into West Germany open with blackmailing innocent people, then turn uglier — forged letters, invented medical reports, surveillance meant to break defectors and their families from the inside. Franz pulls away, quieter and more alone each week. His move to steal classified papers and slip across the border sets off a chain of small failures that ends in his arrest.
