Synopsis
Fog in August (Nebel im August, 2016) is a German wartime drama from director Kai Wessel, available to watch online on iFILM. Southern Germany, the early 1940s. Thirteen-year-old Ernst, a boy from a traveling Yenish family, is branded unmanageable and committed to a locked asylum where the staff don't cure children — they sort them.
Behind the wards runs a quiet operation nobody names aloud: patients deemed unfit are led away and never come back. Ernst, played by Ivo Pietzcker, works out fast where his bunkmates keep vanishing to and starts fighting back — hiding medication, warning the others, buying them another day or two. Sebastian Koch's chief physician is no textbook monster but a courteous man who has talked himself into believing he's merciful.
The story follows Ernst Lossa, a real teenager and one of thousands of children killed under the cover of "treatment" in the Third Reich. Wessel films it without shouting or sermons: a hushed, draining piece that's hard to discuss afterward. Not an easy night, but the kind of film that stays with you.
