Synopsis
Nowhere in Africa (2001) is a German drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Caroline Link and based on Stefanie Zweig's autobiographical novel — it picked up the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2003 ceremony.
The year is 1938. Walter Redlich has already crossed to Kenya to manage a remote farm when his wife Jettel and their five-year-old daughter Regina make the crossing from Germany. Jettel arrives with a china set and an evening gown, unable to accept that there is no going back. Regina adjusts immediately — she picks up Swahili, befriends the family's cook Owuor (Sidede Onyulo), and discovers a country her parents are too afraid to love. Juliane Köhler and Merab Ninidze carry the weight of a marriage tested by exile pulling in opposite directions.
Link filmed partly on location in Kenya over several years of production. The film is fundamentally about what displacement does differently to different people — one mourns what was lost while the other quietly becomes someone new. Stream Nowhere in Africa online on iFILM.
