Synopsis
The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979) is Rainer Werner Fassbinder's drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Germany in the last days of the war: Maria weds her soldier almost under falling bombs, and he's sent back to the front within hours.
The fighting ends, but Hermann never comes home — listed as missing. Maria decides to climb out of the rubble on her own terms, trading on the only assets she has: her looks, a cool head and an iron will. Careers, lovers, money — she takes what she wants without flinching while the ruined country rebuilds around her. Hanna Schygulla turns Maria into one of the fiercest women German cinema has ever put on screen.
This is the opening chapter of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy — the story of West Germany's postwar boom told through a single woman's rise, where the personal and the national fuse completely. Michael Ballhaus shot it with chilly precision, and the ending still gets picked apart in film classes. Essential viewing for anyone who loves the great European auteur cinema of the seventies.
