Synopsis
There's No Religion Anymore (Non c'è più religione, 2016) is an Italian comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Luca Miniero. The setup is almost too good: on a small Mediterranean island, the boy who always played baby Jesus in the annual Christmas nativity has grown up, no new children have been born there in years, and the pageant cannot go forward without an infant.
Newly elected mayor Cecco (Claudio Bisio) proposes the obvious if awkward solution — ask the Tunisian community settled on the island to lend a baby. The Tunisians are Muslim. Immediately, no one is happy. Alessandro Gassmann plays Bilal, a native Italian who converted to Islam, tasked with bridging two communities that are equally convinced the other is asking for too much.
Miniero doesn't go after religion itself — the target is stubbornness, the particular human refusal to bend a rule when doing so would help everyone. Bisio and Gassmann make a sharp comic pair, and the island setting gives the whole thing a warm, unhurried feel. Stream There's No Religion Anymore online on iFILM.
